Automatic Transmission Service Townsville

Your transmission fluid does more than lubricate — it transfers drive force, cools internal components and provides the hydraulic pressure that makes gear changes happen. When that fluid breaks down, shifts get harsh, response slows, and internal wear accelerates. Replacing it at the right intervals is one of the cheapest ways to avoid one of the most expensive repairs on any vehicle.

MB Automotive services automatic transmissions on all makes and models at our Garbutt workshop, using professional Wynn's TranServe fluid exchange equipment that replaces virtually all of the old fluid — not just the portion that drains out by gravity.

Full Fluid Exchange vs Drain-and-Refill

Most workshops do a standard drain-and-refill. The problem is that only around 30–40% of your transmission fluid actually drains out — the rest stays trapped in the torque converter, valve body and cooler lines. You’re mixing fresh fluid with old, degraded fluid and hoping it’s good enough.

Our Wynn’s TranServe machine pushes fresh fluid through the entire transmission circuit while the engine runs, displacing old fluid as it goes. This exchanges around 95% of the total fluid volume, which means the fluid protecting your transmission is actually new — not diluted.

The difference matters most on vehicles that are overdue for a fluid change, or where the fluid has started to discolour and lose its friction properties. A drain-and-refill on heavily degraded fluid still leaves most of that degraded fluid in the system.

We also replace the transmission filter and pan gasket where applicable, and check for leaks, abnormal wear material and fluid condition before and after the exchange.

When Your Transmission Needs Servicing

Most manufacturers recommend automatic transmission fluid replacement between 60,000 and 100,000 km. Some claim the fluid is “lifetime fill” — in practice, no fluid lasts the life of the vehicle, especially in NQ conditions.

Townsville’s heat is hard on transmission fluid. Operating temperatures climb higher in sustained 35°C-plus ambient heat, and the fluid degrades faster as a result. Towing boats, caravans or trailers compounds the problem — towing under load in heat is the hardest thing you can ask of a transmission. If your vehicle tows regularly, shorter intervals around 40,000–60,000 km are worth it.

Signs your fluid needs attention: delayed engagement into drive or reverse, harsh or jerky shifts, shudder under light acceleration, or a burnt smell from the dipstick. Don’t leave it — transmission damage from neglected fluid gets expensive fast.

We also offer power steering fluid exchange for vehicles that need it.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions:

Around 45–60 minutes for most vehicles. We run the engine during the exchange to circulate fluid through the full system, which takes longer than a simple drain but gives a far more complete result.

Yes, provided the transmission is in reasonable working order. We inspect fluid condition before starting and will advise if there's a reason not to proceed. On heavily neglected transmissions with significant internal wear, we'll give you an honest assessment before doing any work. Call (07) 4775 5777 to discuss.

Check your service records. If there's no record, we can inspect the fluid's colour and condition to gauge how overdue it is. Dark or brown fluid with a burnt smell needs replacing regardless of kilometres.
