Diesel & Common Rail Servicing Townsville
Common rail diesel runs at fuel pressures above 25,000 PSI. The difference between a correct diagnosis and a guess can be a $400 sensor versus a $5,000 injector set you didn't need. MB Automotive has the scan tools, injector coding equipment and experience to diagnose common rail faults properly — not just read a code and start swapping parts. We've serviced diesel at our Garbutt workshop for over 20 years — from single-cab utes to full fleet operations. If it runs diesel, this is what we do.
What We Service on Diesel & Common Rail Engines
Injector testing, cleaning and replacement
Common rail injectors wear and start leaking fuel back to the return rail instead of atomising it — symptoms include rough running, poor fuel economy and black smoke. We test return flow rates to identify which ones are actually failing. At $500–$800 per injector, you don't want to replace ones still within spec.
Diesel particulate filter (DPF) diagnosis and servicing
DPFs block up when short trips don't get the exhaust hot enough to burn off trapped soot. We read DPF soot loading and differential pressure data to determine whether the filter needs a forced regeneration, a clean, or replacement. More frequent regens or a gradual power drop are common early signs — most owners don't notice until it's well advanced.
Turbocharger diagnosis and repair
Turbo failures are often caused by oil supply issues, not the turbo itself. We check oil feed lines, wastegate operation and boost pressure before recommending replacement — a new turbo bolted onto a restricted feed line will fail the same way.
Fuel system diagnosis
Contaminated fuel, worn lift pumps and failing fuel pressure regulators can all produce similar symptoms. We trace the problem through the system rather than replacing components one at a time.
EGR valve and intake cleaning
EGR sends exhaust soot back into the intake, where it mixes with oily vapours to form a thick carbon "gunk" that coats intake runners, sticks EGR valves, and chokes airflow. Untreated, it costs you power, increases DPF cycles, drives fuel use up, and can take out the turbo. We diagnose buildup severity properly, then clean it with the Wynn's MultiSERVE — flushing the air intake, fuel and exhaust circuits in place and clearing up to 99.9% of buildup. Cheaper and faster than the old fix of pulling the manifold to scrub by hand.
Glow plug testing and replacement
Faulty glow plugs cause hard starts and rough running in the first few minutes, especially on cooler dry-season mornings. We test resistance and current draw individually rather than replacing the full set on a guess.
Why Common Rail Diesel Needs a Specialist
A basic code reader will tell you something's wrong — not exactly what, or why. Common rail systems are precision-engineered — injectors are individually coded to the ECU, fuel rail pressure is electronically controlled, and DPF and EGR components interact through the engine management system.
Diagnosing these faults requires manufacturer-level scan tools that read live fuel rail pressure, injector flow rates and DPF soot loading — not just stored codes. We carry that equipment and know how to read it, so we fix the actual fault instead of chasing symptoms.
Diesel in North Queensland
Diesel makes up a bigger share of the vehicle fleet in NQ than the national average — 4WDs, work utes, light trucks.
Conditions are hard: dust clogs air filters faster, heat soak after shutdown causes oil coking in the turbo bearing housing, and poor-quality remote-station fuel can damage injectors and high-pressure pumps.
We factor this in: shorter air filter intervals, turbo oil drain-back checked, fuel filter inspected at every service — not just when a warning light comes on. Catching issues early beats reactive repairs after something fails out past Charters Towers.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I know if my diesel injectors need replacing?
Symptoms include rough idle, excessive black smoke, poor fuel economy and a knock at idle. We test injector return flow rates to confirm which ones are failing before recommending replacement — no guesswork.
What causes DPF warning lights in Townsville?
Mostly short trips — the DPF needs sustained highway driving to hit regen temperatures. Townsville's stop-start suburban driving is the worst case. Call (07) 4775 5777 and we'll diagnose whether it needs a regen, a clean, or further investigation.
Is common rail diesel servicing more expensive than petrol?
Slightly, because fuel filters, oil capacity and component complexity are higher. But the real cost risk is misdiagnosis — replacing parts by trial and error on a common rail system gets expensive fast. Proper diagnosis saves money overall.
