Car Battery Testing & Replacement in Townsville
Slow to crank? Headlights dimming at idle? Dashboard warning light? These are signs your battery is on the way out — and in Townsville's heat, they tend to go faster than the packaging suggests. Most batteries up here last 2–3 years rather than the 3–5 you'd get in a cooler climate. Drop into MB Automotive in Garbutt and we'll test yours in about 15–20 minutes. If it needs replacing, we carry batteries for all makes and can usually have you sorted within the hour.
What We Test
A voltage reading alone doesn’t tell the full story — a battery can show 12.6V at rest and still fail the moment it has to start an engine. We use electronic load testers to measure how your battery actually performs under real starting conditions, not just how it looks on paper.
We also check the charging system. A new battery won’t last if your alternator isn’t keeping it charged, or if there’s excessive voltage drop across corroded terminals and connections. And we do a visual inspection for swollen casing, leaking cells, and corrosion — all common in Townsville’s humidity and heat. If your battery passes, we’ll tell you. If it’s borderline, we’ll give you the numbers and let you make the call.
Our Wynn’s TranServe machine pushes fresh fluid through the entire transmission circuit while the engine runs, displacing old fluid as it goes. This exchanges around 95% of the total fluid volume, which means the fluid protecting your transmission is actually new — not diluted.
The difference matters most on vehicles that are overdue for a fluid change, or where the fluid has started to discolour and lose its friction properties. A drain-and-refill on heavily degraded fluid still leaves most of that degraded fluid in the system.
We also replace the transmission filter and pan gasket where applicable, and check for leaks, abnormal wear material and fluid condition before and after the exchange.
Battery Replacement
When a replacement is needed, we fit the right battery for your vehicle and how you use it — not just whatever’s cheapest on the shelf. Every replacement includes terminal cleaning, connection tightening, and a charging system check so the new battery is set up to last. We dispose of the old one properly.
For 4WDs or vehicles with heavy electrical draw — dual battery setups, aftermarket accessories, fridges, winches — we can advise on the right capacity and battery type for your setup.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions:
How long do car batteries last in Townsville?
Typically 2–3 years. Constant heat accelerates internal corrosion and dries out electrolyte fluid, which is why they fall short of the 3–5 year rating on the box. Short trips make it worse because the alternator never fully recharges between starts.
Can you test my battery while I wait?
Yes. Takes about 15–20 minutes. If it needs replacing and we have the right battery in stock, we can usually have you sorted within the hour. Call (07) 4775 5777 to check availability.
