Brake Repairs Townsville

Between the hills around Castle Hill and Paluma Range, regular towing, and bull dust from unsealed roads getting into components — Townsville wears brakes down faster than most drivers expect. Heat compounds it. Brake pads and rotors already generate serious friction heat doing their job, and when the ambient temperature is 30–35°C they're starting from a disadvantage. MB Automotive in Garbutt services brake systems for cars, 4WDs, utes, and fleet vehicles.

In-House Rotor Machining

This is where we save you time and money. Most workshops send rotors out to be machined or skip straight to a full replacement. We do it in-house at our Garbutt workshop on our own brake lathe.

If your rotors have minor scoring, pulsing under braking, or uneven pad deposits, we machine them back to a smooth, true surface — no sending them out, no waiting days for them to come back. Machining is cheaper than a new rotor, and as long as the disc is still above minimum thickness, it performs the same. We measure every rotor with a micrometer before we start. If it’s too thin to machine safely, we’ll tell you and quote a replacement instead — we won’t skim a rotor that shouldn’t be skimmed.

Other Brake Services

Pad Replacement

We fit quality pads matched to your vehicle and how you drive. Towing regularly or running a heavy 4WD? We'll recommend a compound that handles the extra heat rather than just the cheapest option on the shelf.

Brake Fluid Flush

Fluid absorbs moisture over time, lowering its boiling point and reducing pedal feel. In Townsville's heat, degraded fluid is a real problem. Most manufacturers recommend a flush every two years.

Lines, Hoses & Handbrake

Rubber brake hoses deteriorate from the inside out in tropical conditions. We inspect for cracking, swelling, and leaks on every brake job. Braided steel upgrades available for off-road use. We also adjust handbrakes and replace worn cables and shoes — a handbrake that doesn't hold will fail a roadworthy.

Calliper Servicing

Sticking or seized callipers cause uneven wear, pulling under braking, and overheating. Common on vehicles that sit for long periods or cop a lot of dust. We service slides and pistons, or replace the unit if it's too far gone.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions:

Squealing or grinding when braking, vibration through the pedal, pulling to one side, a soft pedal feel, or the brake warning light. Any of these are worth getting checked quickly — brake problems get more expensive the longer you leave them.

Resurfacing the brake disc on a lathe to remove scoring and uneven wear. It's cheaper and faster than a full replacement, and we do it in-house at our Garbutt workshop. We measure rotor thickness first to confirm it's safe to machine.

At least once a year or every 10,000–15,000 km. More frequently if you tow, drive a 4WD, or regularly use steep roads or unsealed surfaces. Townsville's heat and dust wear brakes faster than standard intervals account for.
